Dr. Athena Foran


Athena is a Registered Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the BPS Division of Counselling Psychology.

Athena Athena Forancompleted her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Westminster in 2009, where her undergraduate research on mental health stigma was published in the British Journal of Psychology. Athena went on to do her MSc in Health Psychology at City University, where her interest in individuals’ relationship with food blossomed. She continued her research focusing on parental feeding styles and its effects in adulthood. Whilst at University, Athena pursued her other love of technology and worked both at Apple and Google. In 2015, she completed her Doctorate at City University with her research examining Emotional Eating.

Athena has worked in a variety of settings including charity organisations and the NHS. In addition to her work with Altum Health, Athena works in an NHS Specialist Weight Management Service providing psychological support to individuals struggling with their weight.

She is especially interested in cognitive behavioural approaches, working with clients to manage difficulties such as binge eating disorder, emotional eating, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, as well as mood and anxiety problems.

Athena is also passionate about mindfulness and self-compassion, both of which form fundamental parts of her work. She strongly believes that therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in fostering change and aims to provide a warm, compassionate environment. Athena enjoys working creatively with her clients to individually tailor evidence based interventions to her clients’ needs.  Athena speaks English, Swedish and Polish.
