Prior to completing her doctorate in clinical psychology, Michelle completed a PhD exploring the link between interpersonal difficulties and eating disorders. She worked in an eating disorder service for around five years post-qualification, and has since worked in services for complex trauma, depression and anxiety.
Michelle is an integrative therapist, meaning she is trained in and draws upon a range of approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, and parts work. She is trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, and is trained and experienced in EMDR and trauma-focused CBT.
Michelle is an intersectional feminist, LGBTQ+ friendly, and an anti-racist practitioner. She has particular expertise in cultic dynamics and coercive control in high-demand groups, intimate partner violence, and psychological abuse, and provides training and resources on spiritual and religious abuse in meditation-based groups. Michelle is passionate about holding in mind the impact of socio-political factors on mental health, and the risk of pathologising individuals for coping strategies that may once have served a protective function.
